Radiography of Latin American women entrepreneurs

Women in the world of entrepreneurship are still a minority in Latin America, however, we wanted to know more about these leaders who are setting a precedent for the new generations. What are they like? How old are they? Why did they decide to become entrepreneurs? What are their studies, etc.?

But come on part...

Women entrepreneurs by country

According to a study conducted by Global Entrepreneurship in 49 countries around the world, Latin America has the highest proportion of women entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 64.

Guatemala is the country with the most female entrepreneurship according to the analysis, with 28.20%, followed by Colombia (26.10%) and Chile (25.20%). Panama appears with 24.60% and Uruguay with 23.9%.

An additional - and striking - fact provided by the research is that countries such as Japan, Spain and Germany have rates of less than 10% (of women entrepreneurs).

On the other hand, information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) revealed that in Mexico the percentage reaches 19%. And of this figure, 49% of women are between 18 and 34 years old and 41% are between 35 and 54 years old.

Why do they undertake?

According to Inegi in Mexico, the reasons are:

  • 29% want to have their own business and independence.

  • 20% need to improve their quality of life and standard of living.

  • 20% do it for fun.

  • 18% seek to continue the family business.

  • 13% because they lost their jobs and decided to become entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, in Chile, according to data from the Chilean government, women choose entrepreneurship because:

  • 50% The need to increase revenues

  • 31% The possibility of doing what they like to do

  • 24% For being out of work

  • 24% Compatibility of paid and unpaid work

Educational level

The same Inegi report in Mexico states that 65% of women entrepreneurs have university studies, compared to 53% of men. In Chile, on the other hand, 45.2% have completed high school, 23% have only basic school courses, 16.6% have university studies and 12.7% have technical studies.

Types of ventures

Data from the Mexican Association of Women Heads of Business (AMMJE), female businesses are focused on consumption (62.3%) and, on average, hire fewer employees than men (1.7 employees vs. 1.85 employees).

In addition, they state that the ventures are less technological and industrial, however, 17.8% offer innovative products.

But beyond the data, with this radiography we wanted to congratulate all those women who day after day give everything for their entrepreneurship. They do not know timetables or vacations to work in that business they are passionate about. This March 8 we salute them and encourage them to continue growing.
